Multiplying Polynomials and Reasoning Strategies
We can do modified FOIL and vertical multiplication (both starting from the left or right – your choice) for polynomials larger than binomials.
The rule, regardless of how you multiply is: “Multiply each term of one polynomial by every term of the other. Then, add the results and combine like terms.”
Remember too, the following:
(a + b) * (a – b) = a^2 – b^2
(a + b) * (a + b) = a^2 +b^2 + 2*a*b and
(a – b) * (a – b) = a^2 +b^2 – 2*a*b
Here are strategies, again, for Reasoning Strategies for Chapter 5, Lesson 12:
1. Draw a diagram
2. Make an organized list
3. Look for a pattern
4. Try, test and revise
5. Use logical reasoning
6. Simplify the problem
7. Write an equation
8. Make a table
9. Work backward
