Ratios and Rates
A RATIO is a comparison of 2 numbers by division, like `5/20` or `5:20` or 5 to 20. Ratio numbers have the same UNITS, like feet, pounds, … A RATE is a special ratio. It is a comparison of 2 measurements that have different units of measure, like pounds/foot, miles/gallon … A rate with a 1 in the denominator is called UNIT RATE. To find the UNIT RATE, simplfy the rate so that the denominator = 1.
Example: 329 cents/12 ounces becomes `329/12 = 27.474` or about 27.4 cents per ounce! All you have to do, is divide the denominator INTO the numerator!
