Day 26

Algebra: Chapter 3-4

Expressions and Equations

A QUICK REVIEW

Using both addition and subtraction AND multiplication and division to solve 2 Step equations!
We are trying to isolate the variable (solving for it – or finding out what its value is). Move all constants to the other side of the equation. You can do this by remembering to add or subtract or multiply or divide both sides of the equation.

Steps to do:

  1. When possible, collect like terms and/orUse the distributive property
  2. Then use the addition/subtraction and multiplication/division process.

Hints:

  • Usually, it’s easier to do the add/subtract BEFORE you do the multiplication/division.
  • Don’t forget to use the reciprocal, its sometimes the same as dividing but faster.

DO NOT TAKE ANY SHORTCUTS, SHOW ALL THE WORK IN ALL ITS GORY DETAIL, THIS WILL REALLY SAVE YOU IN THE LONG RUN BY CUTTING DOWN ON SILLY MISTAKES!!

The phrase the quantity suggests a grouping of terms will follow. The words sum, difference, product and quotient also suggests a grouping of terms to follow.

The quantity 3 less than a number is written `n−3`

Intro to Algebra: Chapter 2-3

See yesterday’s discussion.

We worked on addition of rational numbers. The easiest way to remember things:

  1. Adding 2 positive numbers = a positive number
  2. Adding 2 negative numbers = a negative number
  3. Adding a positive and negative number, just subtract the numbers and use the SIGN of the larger number.

So -5 + 4 = 5 – 4 and using the sign of the larger number, the answer is 1 with a negative sign or -1.
