The absolute value of a number is the number’s distance from the 0 on the number line. Absolute value is denoted by these | -4| vertical bars. So, the |-4| = 4 units from 0 on the number line and its value is 4.
Remember, the absolute value of a number is ALWAYS a positive value is the easiest way to remember things.
Algebra: Chapter 2-3
Yesterday, Tuesday, September 19
We worked on addition of rationale numbers. The easiest way to remember things:
adding 2 positive numbers = a positive number
adding 2 negative numbers = a negative number
adding a positive and negative number, just subtract the numbers and use the SIGN of the larger number. So -5 + 4 = 5 – 4 and using the sign of the larger number, the answer is 1 with a negative sign or -1.
