Pre-Algebra: Chapter 10, Lesson 5
Counting (we skipped Lesson 4 deliberately)
We learned the Fundamental Counting Principle: If event X can occur in “a” ways and is followed by event Y that can occur in “b” ways, then the event X followed by event Y can occur in a * b ways.
The Learning the Concept example on page 59 is good to practice with. If we have a store that has 9 different kinds of bagels and has 10 different kinds of cream cheese, then they can advertise that:
- each bagel can have 10 kinds of cheese, and …
- since there are 9 different bagels, we can make (if you make a counting tree diagram) 90 different mixes of bagel/cream cheese combos, or …
- the easy was is forget the tree and use the Fundamental Counting Principle and have 9 * 10 = 90 combos!
